Ingredients
- 8 oz Tempeh
- ½ C BBQ Sauce, either your favorite from the store or your own (see notes), divided
- Water
- Quick Pickle Red Onion
- Hot dog Buns
Instructions
- 1 Preheat Oven To 375: Preheat oven to 375.
- 2 Cut The Tempeh In Half In: Cut the tempeh in half in both directions to make 4 pieces. Place each piece on its side and carefully slice in half to make two equal size flat pieces.
- 3 Arrange Pieces In A Small Baking: Arrange pieces in a small baking dish.
- 4 Cover With ¼ C Bbq Sauce: Cover with ¼ C BBQ sauce then add water to cover the tempeh completely. The BBQ sauce doesn’t need to be mixed into the water - baking will do that for you.
- 5 Bake For About 30 Minutes, Or: Bake for about 30 minutes, or until water is mostly evaporated and the BBQ sauce is fragrant. Flip each piece and spread the remaining sauce evenly over the pieces. Bake another 15 minutes, or until beginning to brown and the tempeh is still moist.
- 6 Arrange 2 Pieces On A Bun: Arrange 2 pieces on a bun and top with the quick pickle onion, to taste. Add more BBQ sauce if desired.
Pro Tips & Delicious Variations
- Goes great with fresh vegetables, like corn on the cob, southern squash, or a kid favorite: tater tots!
- Underbaking is better than overbaking - no one likes dried out tempeh.
- Feel free to experiment with other toppings, like pickled okra, sprouts and feta cheese, white onion and pickle chips, or anything that you may have that can stand up with the sweet and savory BBQ.
